Therapy for Anxiety

Anxiety Therapy for When Your Mind Won’t Stop and Your Body Won’t Settle.

Inhale, Exhale

You’re exhausted from a brain that treats every text, deadline, and silence as a potential emergency. Maybe it shows up as racing thoughts at 2 a.m., a tight chest before you even open your inbox, or the constant low hum of “something’s wrong” even when nothing is. You’ve probably already tried to think your way out of it — and you’re still here. That’s because anxiety isn’t a logic problem; it’s a nervous system and thought-pattern problem, and it responds to the right kind of help. At Made Well Center for Wholeness, our Wilmington, NC anxiety therapists help you understand what’s driving your anxiety and build real, sustainable calm — not just a list of breathing exercises you’ll forget under stress.

You Might Be Here Because…

  • Your mind jumps to worst-case scenarios before you can stop it.
  • You replay conversations for hours wondering if you said the wrong thing.
  • Your body holds tension you can’t seem to release — clenched jaw, upset stomach, shallow breathing.
  • You feel like you’re waiting for the other shoe to drop, even during good moments.
  • Making decisions — even small ones — feels overwhelming and paralyzing.
  • You’ve canceled plans or avoided situations because the anxiety felt like too much.
  • You’re tired in a way sleep doesn’t fix, because your brain never fully powers down.
  • People say “just relax” like it’s that simple, and it makes you want to scream.
  • You feel anxious about being anxious — a spiral that feeds itself.
  • You’ve prayed about it, tried supplements, or read the books, and you’re still stuck.

What Anxiety Actually Feels Like

Anxiety isn’t just “worrying too much” — it’s a full-body alarm system that’s misfiring, treating everyday stress like genuine danger. Clinically, this can look like Generalized Anxiety Disorder (constant, free-floating worry), panic attacks (sudden, intense physical symptoms that can feel like a heart attack), social anxiety (dread around being seen or judged), or health anxiety (fear something is physically wrong). But underneath the clinical labels, anxiety usually feels like: a brain on a hamster wheel, a body that can’t fully exhale, and a nagging sense that if you just tried harder or planned more, you could finally feel in control. You can’t out-think a nervous system response — which is exactly why therapy focused on both mind and body works where willpower alone hasn’t.

How Made Well Works With You Differently

We don’t hand you a printed coping-skills sheet and call it treatment. Our clinicians use evidence-based approaches — including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and nervous-system-focused techniques — matched to how your anxiety actually shows up, whether that’s racing thoughts, physical panic symptoms, perfectionistic overworking, or avoidance. We also look upstream: many anxious clients are carrying unprocessed stress, trauma, or people-pleasing patterns that fuel the anxiety loop, and we treat the root, not just the symptom. For clients who want it, we integrate faith and spiritual practice into anxiety care — because for many people, wrestling with anxious thoughts is also a wrestling with trust, control, and surrender.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Scroll through our frequently asked questions below to learn more about how we might be the best fit to walk with you on this journey to healing and wholeness:

How do I know if what I'm feeling is normal stress or an anxiety disorder?

Everyday stress usually passes once the situation resolves. Anxiety disorders involve worry that’s excessive, persistent (most days for several weeks or more), and interferes with sleep, work, or relationships even when there’s no clear immediate threat. A clinical assessment can help you get clarity either way.

What's the difference between anxiety and a panic attack?

Anxiety is often an ongoing state of worry or tension, while a panic attack is a sudden, intense episode of physical symptoms — racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, or a feeling of doom — that peaks within minutes. Panic attacks can happen with or without a broader anxiety disorder, and both are treatable.

Can therapy actually help with anxiety, or do I just need medication?

Therapy, especially CBT, EMDR, and ACT, has strong research support for treating anxiety, and many people see significant improvement without medication. For some, a combination of therapy and medication (through a prescriber) works best — we can help you think through what fits your situation.

Why do I feel anxious even when my life looks fine on paper?

Anxiety doesn’t require an external “reason” to be present — it can stem from personality traits, past experiences, unprocessed stress, or even genetics, regardless of how things look from the outside. “Nothing’s technically wrong” and “I feel anxious all the time” can both be true at once.

Is it normal to feel anxious about being anxious?

Yes — this is called meta-anxiety, and it’s extremely common. Fearing the next panic attack or worry spiral can become its own cycle, and it’s a pattern therapy directly addresses.

Can perfectionism and anxiety be connected?

Very often, yes. Perfectionism frequently functions as a way to manage anxiety and control — if everything is done “right,” the anxious brain believes nothing bad can happen. Treating the anxiety usually requires addressing the perfectionism underneath it too.

Why does my anxiety show up as anger or irritability instead of worry?

Anxiety doesn’t always look like visible fear — it often shows up as irritability, snapping at loved ones, or a short fuse, especially when someone has been suppressing worry for a long time. This is a very common and treatable pattern.

Is it possible to have anxiety and still function well at work or as a parent?

Yes — this is sometimes called “high-functioning anxiety,” where someone appears capable and put-together on the outside while privately struggling with constant worry, perfectionism, or dread. It’s just as valid and treatable as more visible anxiety.

Do you treat anxiety in kids or teens too, or only adults?

YES! Our clinicians work with ages 10+
