ADHD & Neurodivergence

ADHD Therapy for Brains That Were Never “Lazy,”

Just Wired Differently

Neurodivergence is a superpower!

You’ve been called scattered, forgetful, “too much,” or not trying hard enough — and you know, deep down, that you’re trying so much harder than anyone can see. Maybe you were just diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and are grieving all the years you spent thinking you were the problem. Maybe you’re not diagnosed yet but everything you’ve read about ADHD in women, teens, or late-diagnosed adults finally sounds like someone describing your actual brain. Either way, you don’t need more willpower — you need support that understands how your brain actually works. At Made Well Center for Wholeness, our ADHD-trained therapists in Wilmington, NC (and online) help you build a life that works with your brain instead of constantly fighting it.

You Might Be Here Because…

  • You’ve spent your whole life being told you’re “so smart” but “not living up to your potential.”
  • Your emotions feel bigger and faster than other people’s — rejection especially can feel unbearable.
  • You start ten things and finish two, and the guilt about it never really goes away.
  • You’ve built an entire identity around masking, overcompensating, or being the “together” one.
  • Time feels abstract to you — you’re either painfully early or shockingly late, rarely on time without a fight.
  • You’re exhausted from working three times as hard as everyone else just to keep up.
  • You were diagnosed as an adult (or suspect you might have ADHD) and are only now understanding your whole life through that lens.
  • Systems and planners that work for other people fall apart for you within days.
  • You hyperfocus intensely on some things and can’t make yourself start others, no matter how important they are.
  • You’ve been misdiagnosed with anxiety or depression for years without anyone considering ADHD.

What ADHD Actually Feels Like

ADHD in adults, especially in women and people who were never hyperactive as kids, often looks nothing like the stereotype. It can show up as executive dysfunction (difficulty starting, organizing, or finishing tasks), emotional dysregulation (intense, fast-moving emotions, especially around rejection or criticism), time blindness, chronic overwhelm, and deep shame from years of being misunderstood. Many people with ADHD — women in particular — spend decades masking their symptoms so effectively that ADHD goes undiagnosed until a major life stressor, a child’s diagnosis, or burnout finally makes the coping strategies stop working. ADHD is not a focus problem so much as a regulation problem — regulating attention, emotion, time, and energy — and it responds to the right kind of support, not more discipline.

How Made Well Works With You Differently

We don’t treat ADHD as a willpower issue or hand you a generic productivity system that wasn’t designed for your brain. Our clinicians help you understand your specific ADHD presentation — inattentive, hyperactive, or combined — and build practical systems, emotional regulation skills, and self-compassion work around how your brain actually functions, not how you’ve been told it “should.” We also treat the years of shame, misdiagnosis, or masking that often come with late diagnosis, especially for adults who were called lazy, dramatic, or scattered long before anyone considered ADHD. When ADHD overlaps with anxiety, perfectionism, or burnout — which it often does — we treat the whole picture together rather than one piece at a time.

What Therapy Here Looks Like:

1. Free consultation, or Email Scheduling — talk through your history, symptoms, and whether ADHD-informed care is the right fit.

2. Whole-person Assessmentlooking at executive function, emotional regulation, history of masking, and any overlapping anxiety or mood concerns

3. A personalized treatment plan — practical systems plus deeper work on shame, self-worth, and self-understanding after a life of feeling “different.”

4. Ongoing Support that adapts — because what works for your brain this month may need to shift next month, and that’s expected, not a failure

Who We Work With:

  • • Adults recently diagnosed with ADHD, processing what that means for their life story
  • Women with historically under-recognized ADHD presentations
  • Adolescents/Teens who suspect ADHD but haven’t pursued formal diagnosis yet
  • Clients with ADHD and co-occurring anxiety, depression, or perfectionism
  • Parents with ADHD raising kids with ADHD
  • High-achieving professionals managing ADHD through exhausting compensation strategies

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Scroll through our frequently asked questions below to learn more about how we might be the best fit to walk with you on this journey to healing and wholeness:

How do I know if I have ADHD or if I'm just disorganized and stressed?

ADHD involves a persistent pattern of inattention, impulsivity, and/or executive dysfunction that dates back to childhood (even if undiagnosed) and significantly affects multiple areas of life, not just a stressful season. A clinical assessment can help clarify whether what you’re experiencing fits an ADHD pattern or is situational stress.

Why wasn't I diagnosed with ADHD as a kid if I've had it my whole life?

ADHD diagnostic criteria were originally developed based on hyperactive boys, meaning inattentive presentations — more common in girls and often mistaken for daydreaming, anxiety, or “being a good student who tries hard” — were frequently missed. Many adults, especially women, aren’t diagnosed until adulthood, often after masking symptoms for decades.

Why do my emotions feel so much bigger and faster than other people's?

Emotional dysregulation is a core, often under-discussed symptom of ADHD — many adults with ADHD experience intense emotional reactions, especially to rejection or criticism (sometimes called Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria), that can feel disproportionate to the situation but are a real neurological pattern, not an overreaction.

Can ADHD be mistaken for anxiety or depression?

Yes, very commonly. The chronic overwhelm, self-criticism, and exhaustion of unmanaged ADHD can look a lot like anxiety or depression, which is why many adults are treated for years for the “wrong” primary condition before ADHD is identified and properly addressed.

Why do productivity systems and planners that work for everyone else never work for me?

Most mainstream productivity systems are designed for neurotypical executive function, which relies on different mechanisms than the ADHD brain uses. Therapy can help you build systems tailored to how your specific brain manages time, motivation, and task-switching, rather than forcing a system that was never built for you.

What is "time blindness," and is it a real ADHD symptom?

Time blindness is a well-documented ADHD symptom involving difficulty accurately sensing how much time has passed or how long a task will take, which can lead to chronic lateness or last-minute scrambling despite genuine effort to plan ahead. It’s a neurological pattern, not a character flaw.

Do I need a formal ADHD diagnosis to start therapy for it?

No — you can begin ADHD-informed therapy to address symptoms and patterns even without (or while pursuing) a formal diagnostic evaluation; we can also discuss referral options for formal ADHD testing if that would be helpful for you.

Why do I hyperfocus intensely on some things and completely avoid others?

Hyperfocus and task-avoidance are two sides of the same ADHD coin — attention regulation, not attention deficit — meaning your brain can lock onto highly stimulating or interesting tasks for hours while struggling to start ones that feel boring or overwhelming, regardless of importance.

Can adults be diagnosed with ADHD for the first time later in life?

Yes — adult-onset diagnosis is increasingly common, often triggered by a child’s diagnosis, a major life transition, or burnout that finally overwhelms years of coping strategies. It’s never “too late” to understand your brain and get support.

Is medication necessary to treat ADHD, or can therapy help on its own?

Some adults benefit significantly from ADHD medication (through a prescriber), while others manage well with therapy, coaching-style support, and structural changes alone — many people use a combination. We can help you think through options and coordinate with a prescriber if needed.

Why do I feel so much shame about things that are "just" ADHD symptoms?

Years of being misunderstood, criticized, or told you’re not trying hard enough often leave adults with ADHD carrying deep shame that’s separate from the ADHD symptoms themselves — this shame is very treatable and is often a core focus of therapy alongside practical skill-building.

Your brain was never the problem — it just needed the right kind of support. Schedule a free consultation with a Made Well ADHD-informed therapist and start building a life that actually fits how you’re wired.
