Parenting Support & Therapy
Parenting Support for When You Love Them Fiercely and Still Feel Like You’re Drowning
You Matter Too!
You’d do anything for your kids — and some days, you’re not sure you have anything left to give. Maybe you’re snapping over things that don’t matter and hating yourself for it five minutes later. Maybe you’re touched-out, sleep-deprived, and grieving the version of yourself that existed before kids. Maybe you’re parenting differently than you were raised and have no map for how to do it. None of that makes you a bad parent — it makes you a human one, running on empty in a role that never clocks out. At Made Well Center for Wholeness, we help parents in Wilmington, NC (and online) get honest support for the parts of parenting nobody prepared them for, without judgment and without pretending it should be easier than it is.
You Might Be Here Because…
- You snap at your kids over small things and immediately feel wracked with guilt.
- You’re touched-out, overstimulated, or “peopled out” by the end of most days.
- You feel like you’re constantly failing, no matter how much you’re doing right.
- You’re parenting in reaction to how you were raised and don’t always know what you’re reacting toward.
- Anger comes up faster and hotter than you want it to, and it scares you.
- You’ve lost touch with who you are outside of being needed by everyone.
- Bedtime, mornings, or transitions feel like landmines you’re just trying to survive.
- You compare yourself to other parents online and feel like you’re failing by comparison.
- You and your co-parent or partner are constantly at odds about how to parent.
- You love your kids desperately and still sometimes fantasize about being alone for just one hour
What Parenting Overwhelm Actually Feels Like
Parenting stress isn’t a character flaw — it’s a chronic, cumulative load on a nervous system that rarely gets to fully rest. It can look like parental burnout (emotional exhaustion, detachment, and loss of parenting confidence), postpartum mood or rage symptoms, reactive anger rooted in your own unprocessed childhood, or the quiet grief of an identity that’s changed faster than you could process it. For many parents, this shows up as guilt-shame spirals: you react in a way you don’t like, feel terrible about it, try harder, and hit the same wall again days later. This isn’t about loving your kids more — it’s about having actual support, coping tools, and, often, unprocessed history that needs attention so your reactions can catch up to your intentions.
How Made Well Works With You Differently
We don’t just hand you parenting scripts and send you home — we look at what’s underneath the reactivity, exhaustion, or guilt, because sustainable change starts there. Many parents we work with are unknowingly repeating patterns from their own upbringing, managing untreated anxiety or trauma, or simply running on a chronic stress load with no real recovery time — we treat the whole person, not just the parenting behavior. Faith-integrated care is available for parents who want their spiritual values woven into the work, and we take a systems-aware approach that considers your marriage, co-parenting relationship, and family dynamics as part of the picture, not separate from it.
What Therapy Here Looks Like:
1. Free consultation, or Email Scheduling — talk through what’s feeling hardest right now, without judgment
2. Whole-person intake — we look at your stress load, history, relationships, and nervous system, not just “parenting techniques.”
3. A personalized treatment plan — addressing reactivity, burnout, unprocessed history, or relationship strain, depending on what’s actually driving things.
4. Practical Tools + Deeper Work — you leave with things that help today and a plan that addresses the root causes over time.
Who We Work With:
- Exhausted parents of young children experiencing burnout or overwhelm
- Parents struggling with anger, reactivity, or “mom rage” / “dad rage”
- New and postpartum parents navigating mood changes and identity shifts
- Parents actively working to break generational patterns from their own upbringing
- Blended families and co-parents navigating complex dynamics
- Parents of neurodivergent or high-needs children carrying extra mental load
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Scroll through our frequently asked questions below to learn more about how we might be the best fit to walk with you on this journey to healing and wholeness:
Is it normal to feel angry at my kids even though I love them?
Yes — anger is a normal human emotion, and feeling it toward your children doesn’t make you a bad parent, especially when you’re chronically under-slept, under-supported, or carrying unprocessed stress. Therapy can help you understand what’s fueling the anger and reduce how often it takes over.
Why do I snap over small things and then feel terrible afterward?
This guilt-shame cycle usually points to a nervous system that’s overloaded — when your stress capacity is maxed out, small triggers can produce outsized reactions, and the shame afterward often makes the pattern harder to break on your own. Therapy addresses both the stress load and the reaction pattern.
Is "mom rage" or "dad rage" a real thing?
Yes — intense, sudden anger in parents, sometimes called mom rage or dad rage, is increasingly recognized as a real and common experience linked to burnout, hormonal shifts, sleep deprivation, and unprocessed stress or trauma. It’s treatable, not a permanent personality trait.
Why do I feel like I'm losing myself since becoming a parent?
Matrescence and patrescence (the psychological transition into parenthood) involve a real identity shift, and it’s common to grieve your pre-parent identity even while loving your children — this doesn’t mean something is wrong with you.
Can therapy help me stop repeating the parenting patterns I grew up with?
Yes, this is one of the most common and effective things therapy addresses — becoming aware of inherited patterns is the first step, and therapy helps you build new responses so your reactions can catch up with your intentions.
How do I know if what I'm feeling is normal parenting stress or something more, like postpartum depression or anxiety?
Normal stress usually fluctuates and improves with rest or support; postpartum depression or anxiety tends to be persistent, affects most days, and can include intrusive thoughts, numbness, or a sense of disconnection from your baby. A clinical assessment can help clarify which you’re experiencing and get you the right support.
Can you help even if my "parenting issue" is really about my marriage or co-parenting relationship?
Yes — parenting stress and relationship strain are often deeply connected, and we can address both individually and, when appropriate, bring your partner or co-parent into the work.
Is it okay to want time away from my kids without feeling guilty?
Yes. Needing space and time to recharge is a normal human need, not a reflection of how much you love your children — guilt about this need is extremely common and is something therapy can help you work through.
Do you offer faith-based parenting support?
Yes. For parents who want it, we can integrate your faith and values into the work — including how you think about discipline, grace, identity, and rest — alongside clinically sound parenting and stress support.
What if my child has extra needs (neurodivergence, medical, behavioral) and I'm burned out from managing it all?
We regularly work with parents carrying the extra mental and emotional load of raising a neurodivergent or high-needs child — this is valid, exhausting work, and support for you as the parent matters just as much as support for your child.
Do you see parents individually, or do you also work with couples on parenting conflict?
Both. We can work with you individually on your own patterns and stress, and we also offer couples/family sessions specifically focused on parenting alignment and conflict.
You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through parenthood alone. Schedule a free consultation with a Made Well therapist and get real support for the parts of parenting no one warned you about.
